Gigapan aerial view of Burning Man ’09

Check out this rad pannable aerial view of Black Rock City. So sad I didn’t make it this year. Next time…

Mitchell Heinrich’s Scent Graffiti

I’m totally in love with this idea. Scent is such a powerful sense, yet remains under-utilized in design. Heinrich has upended the practice of graffiti by taking it out of the visual realm and making these ephermal urban interventions. He explains,

“Scent is interpreted by the limbic system which is very closely tied to emotion and memory. This leads me to believe that interacting with people using scent can potentially be a much more powerful medium than paint since people experiencing it can’t help but react to it. The goal of this project is to realize the potential of smell as art and to explore different ways of using it to interact with people.”

He’s even put up an instructable on how to make your own scent spray cans. I’m definitely going to give it a shot.

House of Antlers

I’ve been hanging out with the House of Yes crew recently and fell in love with this deer they had sitting on the couch. I do their website/mailing list and they always have interesting stuff going on; check out their upcoming events if you’re in NYC.

Roxy Paine at the Met

I was recently at the Met and caught Roxy Paine’s Maelstrom on the roof garden. The piece is huge, and interacts nicely with the space. The sculpture feels very participatory and invites you to meander through it, altering your perception of the city view surrounding you and challenging the boundaries between nature and artifice.

Yo La Tengo

I won tickets to see Yo La Tengo from Superglued! I never win anything! I really like their new album, “Popular Songs,” and they put on a great show. I’ll post video soon.

Miike Snow – “Animal”

I’ve had this song stuck in my head for weeks and have been listening to Miike Snow’s album pretty much every day on my commute. He’s very Brooklyn and sounds a lot like Passion Pit, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. [more…]

Trash Cubes

Proof that good packaging design can persuade the consumer to buy even the most banal products: Justin Guignac has already sold 1,200 of these trash cubes, which are handpicked from the streets of New York City. http://www.nycgarbage.com/
